First Quarter Kindergarten skills:

Below is a list of skills we will be introducing and working on this quarter.   

We will be building on these skills throughout the year.

 

Reading Speaking and Listening

*Understand that we read top to bottom and left to right

*Name the parts of a book: front/back cover and title page

*Author/Illustrator

*Main idea/Summarize 

*Letters-Name upper-case/lower-case letters 

*Tell the sound a letter makes

*Blend and segment sounds

*Decode CVC words 

*Read high frequency words 

*Engage in group reading activities with purpose and understanding 

*Follow agreed upon rules for discussion

*Continue a conversation 

*Add drawings to provide more details 

*Speaking clearly to express thoughts, feelings, and ideas

 

Writing and Language

*Use drawing to give information about a book 

*Sorting common objects into categories 

*Understands opposites/rhyming/preposition words 

*Make real-life connections between words and their use 

*Understand and act out synonyms/antonyms 

*Use new words and phrases in speaking and writing

 

Math

*Count (by ones) and write numbers to 10 

*Count forward from a given number up to 10 

*Recognize numbers out of order to 15 

*Count to tell the number of objects up to 5 (1-1 correspondence) 

*Understand the last number said tells how many up to 5 

*Count to answer ‘how many?’ up to 5; count out a number of objects up to 5; compare numbers 

*Identify greater than, less than, and equal to 

* Compare two written numbers between 1-10 

*Name shapes in the environment and position words 

*Identify, model, and draw 2D shapes

*Analyze & Compare 2D shapes by attributes 

*Compose simple shapes to make larger shapes 

*Sort objects and count groups

 

Social Studies

*Civic Participation and Skills-

Individuals have shared responsibilities toward the achievement of common goals in homes, schools and communities. 

*Rules and Laws-

The purpose of rules and authority figures is to provide order, security and safety in the home, school and community. 

*Heritage-

Nations are represented by symbols and practices. Symbols and practices of the United States include the American flag, Pledge of Allegiance and the National Anthem.

 

Science

Earth and Space Science- Weather changes are long-term and short term.
